Maintaining your self-tan

Maintaining your self-tan

A guide to self-tan maintenance: sustain your glow all year round

You’ve finally achieved the perfect tan with your After Dark tanning mousse, and now you want to make it last as long as possible. Here, we'll walk you through the secrets to maintaining your self-tan for that sun-kissed look all year round.

1. Pre-tan prep

Firstly, a successful self-tan starts even before you apply your tanning mousse. Smooth, exfoliated skin ensures an even application and prolongs your tan. The day before tanning, gently exfoliate your skin to remove dead cells, focusing on areas like knees, elbows, and ankles. Follow up with a hydrating moisturiser to prevent dry patches that might absorb more product.

2. Apply with care

When it comes to self-tanning, patience truly is a virtue! Apply your self-tanner in sections to ensure even distribution. A self-tanning mitt can help achieve a streak-free finish and protect your hands from staining. Remember, less is more, especially on tricky areas like your knees and elbows. Allow the product to dry fully before dressing or going to bed to avoid smearing the tan.

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

After tanning, hydration is your new best friend. Keep your skin moisturised daily to maintain your tan's longevity and lustre. Avoid products with harsh ingredients like alcohol or strong fragrances that can dry out your skin and fade your tan faster. Opt for natural, hydrating ingredients to keep your tan glowing longer.

4. Gentle exfoliation

Start gentle exfoliation a week after application to keep your tan even as it fades. Over time, certain areas may fade quicker than others, and light exfoliation can help balance the colour.

5. Top up your tan

Finally, don't be afraid to top up your tan as needed. Using your After Dark tanning mousse can help boost your tan's intensity and evenness without starting from scratch.

6. Protect your skin

Even though your skin looks sun-kissed, protecting it from the sun is still important. Self-tan doesn't provide any UV protection, so always apply broad-spectrum sunscreen when you're heading outdoors.

And there you have it, our tips to keep your self-tan looking fabulous for longer. With the right preparation, application, and aftercare, you can maintain that enviable glow all year round.
